About the Cooper Test Calculator
The Cooper test is one of the oldest and most trusted field tests of cardiorespiratory fitness. Designed by Dr Kenneth Cooper in 1968, it asks a simple question: how far can you run in 12 minutes? From that distance the calculator estimates your VO2 max, the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during hard exercise, and gives you a fitness rating for your age and sex. You can also use the 1.5 mile run version if you prefer a fixed distance.

How VO2 max is estimated
For the 12 minute run, the calculator uses Cooper's original equation: VO2 max equals your distance in meters minus 504.9, divided by 44.73. For the 1.5 mile run it uses VO2 max equals 483 divided by your time in minutes, plus 3.5. Both are validated field estimates that correlate strongly with laboratory VO2 max testing, which is far more expensive and uncomfortable.

Your VO2 max is compared against established norms that vary by age and sex, since fitness expectations naturally shift over a lifetime. The rating runs from very poor up to superior. How to run a fair test
For a reliable result, warm up first, run on a flat measured track or use a GPS watch, and give a genuine hard effort that you can just sustain for the full 12 minutes.
