The Holliday-Segar method is the most widely used formula for calculating maintenance IV fluid requirements. It accounts for the higher metabolic rate per kilogram in smaller patients.
It estimates maintenance fluid needs based on body weight: 100 mL/kg for the first 10 kg, 50 mL/kg for the next 10 kg, and 20 mL/kg for each additional kg above 20 kg.
