This BMI calculator follows the National Institutes of Health (NIH) classification, the same cut-offs most US clinicians use. It divides your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared and places the result into a standard weight category, including the more detailed obesity classes the NIH defines.

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat directly, and it can overstate risk in muscular people or understate it in older adults who have lost muscle. I think of it as a useful first glance that works best alongside a measurement like waist circumference.

The NIH categories

The NIH uses: underweight below 18.5, normal weight from 18.5 to 24.9, overweight from 25 to 29.9, and obesity at 30 or above. Obesity is then split into Class I (30 to 34.9), Class II (35 to 39.9) and Class III (40 and above). Those classes help clinicians gauge how closely to monitor someone and what kind of support might help, which is the practical reason the extra detail exists.

Same formula, standardized labels

People sometimes ask whether the NIH formula is different from regular BMI. It is not, the math is identical (weight divided by height squared). What NIH adds is a consistent set of category labels and health-risk guidance built around those numbers, so that results mean the same thing from one clinic to the next.

Why it can mislead

The same caveats apply here as to any BMI. It cannot separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read high despite low body fat, and people with little muscle can read normal while carrying excess fat. It also says nothing about fat distribution, and central (belly) fat carries more risk. Waist circumference is the simple companion measurement I recommend.

What to do with the result

If your result sits in the healthy range and you feel well, it is reassuring. If it lands in the overweight or obesity range, treat it as a reason to look closer and, especially for higher classes or alongside other risk factors like high blood pressure or blood sugar, to discuss it with a healthcare provider. The class labels are there to guide care, not to label you.
