Sonic Drive-In Nutrition Calculator: A Dietitian's Guide

Written & reviewed by Jennifer Zoned, PhDLast reviewed June 2026Based on official Sonic Drive-In nutrition data

Sonic is almost two restaurants in one. There is the food menu of burgers, dogs and sides, and then there is the enormous drinks and frozen lineup, the slushes, shakes and customizable sodas, that the brand is arguably best known for. That drinks side is exactly where the calories hide, and where this calculator is most useful.

This page tracks a very large menu, hundreds of items once you count all the drink and add-in combinations. The numbers run from tiny flavor add-ins up to the big loaded items, and the calculator turns that sprawl into figures you can plan around rather than guess at from the car.

647menu items tracked
404average calories per item
50calories in a lighter pick (BLUE COCONUT ADD-IN RT 44®)
1720calories in the heaviest (OREO® PEANUT BUTTER SHAKE LARGE)
58gprotein in the top pick (SuperSONIC® Bacon Double Cheesebur…)

The drinks and frozen menu: where the calories actually live

This is the part I always start with, because Sonic's drink menu is huge and the calories there are the easiest to overlook. A customized slush, a shake or a sweet soda can carry as much energy as a full meal, and because we drink them rather than chew them, they almost never register in the mental tally.

The flavor add-ins look tiny on the screen, and individually they are, but they stack. The single most useful habit at Sonic is to treat the drink as part of the meal from the start, not as a free extra ordered on impulse.

Burgers, dogs and the food side

The food menu follows familiar fast-food patterns. Burgers scale with patties, cheese and sauce, and the loaded specialty builds sit at the higher end. The hot dogs and coneys are tasty but can carry more than they look, especially the chili-and-cheese versions, because the toppings do real work on the number.

None of this is off limits. It just helps to know that a 'simple' loaded dog or a double burger is a full meal in its own right before the drink and side even arrive.

Tots, fries and the sides

The tots are a Sonic signature, and like fries they scale with size and climb when loaded with cheese and chili. A regular size as a side to a sensible main is very different from a large loaded version that is really a meal on its own.

Choosing the side size deliberately is one of the simplest ways to keep the whole order in range.

Breakfast and the all-day items

Sonic serves breakfast items through the day, which is convenient, and the burritos and morning sandwiches are satisfying and protein-forward. They lean rich, so count them as a full meal, and keep an eye on the breakfast drink, which at Sonic is often a sweetened specialty option rather than plain coffee.

How I’d order here
  • Decide on the drink first and count it, since the drinks menu is where the calories hide.
  • Go easy on stacking flavor add-ins, which add up quietly.
  • Choose a regular side over a large loaded one unless it is meant to be the meal.
  • Treat loaded dogs and double burgers as full meals.
  • Check the numbers before you order.

Sources & method

Nutrition values are compiled from official Sonic Drive-In published nutrition information and reputable public nutrition databases, then normalized to a consistent per-item format. Figures vary with build, size and customization, so use this calculator as a close guide and confirm in-store details when you need exact numbers. Frequently Asked Questions

The drinks and frozen menu. Customized slushes, shakes and sweet sodas can carry as many calories as a full meal, and because they are drinks they rarely register. Decide on your drink first and count it as part of the meal.

Individually they are small, but they stack quickly once you add several. They are easy to enjoy, just include them in your total rather than treating each one as free.

They are similar nutritionally, and both scale with size and climb when loaded with cheese and chili. A regular size as a side is very different from a large loaded version, which is really a meal on its own.

Yes. Pair a single burger or a grilled item with a regular side and an unsweetened or zero-calorie drink, and the meal stays well in range. The drink choice is usually the biggest lever here.
